All about
Thatch Design & Goods
Thatch Design & Goods, established in 2015, is a studio floral design company focused on creating natural designs using seasonal and locally grown flowers. The Creative Director, Sarajane Brown, shapes the vision of the company and is the chief design director for every event.
Over the years, Thatch has supported and employed many collaborators, allowing them to explore their collective passion for growing, harvesting, experimenting, and arranging botanicals.
Thatch Design & Goods sources flowers from farmers that we know by name and that have farming practices that support the health of the environment and have a commitment to care for their staff. We also strive to create minimal waste with our work, to recycle, and to compost.
To connect with the community and provide a place to learn, each year Thatch hosts 15-20 floral design and wreath workshops.
CREATIVE DIRECTOR
SARAJANE BROWN
Sarajane Brown, Creative Director of Thatch Floral Design and Goods, has loved nature and flowers since a young age, when she helped on her family's farm in Kentucky.
In her early years, she spent time topping fields of tobacco blooms, picking heirloom roses, collecting grapes from her grandmother's front yard, carting home wild polk berries, gathering vetch, and bringing Queen Anne's lace home for the table centerpiece.
While living abroad with her family in Tokyo in later childhood, Sarajane attended ikebana classes with her mother and took an interest in photographing and foraging natural materials wherever she traveled.
After graduating from Samford University with a degree in psychology, Sarajane dedicated her time toward restorative justice efforts through serving as an AmeriCorps volunteer and directing a coalition against human trafficking in the Southeast United States. But, Sarajane eventually returned to her love and passion for flowers. After a six month sabbatical from her social justice position, Sarajane noticed her interest and creativity return as she sought out flower shops, greenhouses, and gardens in each city in Europe she went to.
With the encouragement and support from the Seattle community, Thatch Floral was born in 2015. As a professional floral designer, Sarajane has had the opportunity to work with a variety of clients, venues, seasons, and geographic areas. As a creative, sheβs had the chance to explore design with a huge variety of native plants, local farms, and the textures of the natural world.
Sarajane is a student of kalapa ikebana, a contemplative practice in the Japanese art form of flower arranging.
Working with everything from mushrooms to grasses, Sarajane delights in playing with the beauty of the earth. Her florals have been described as elemental, wild, hand-picked, and natural.
She takes a very limited number of events each year so that she can be fully present for each one. She currently lives in Seattle and Nashville and is frequently in Kentucky working with her mom on the family flower farm.
