Setting a New Standard for
Sourcing & Sustainability
The Background
Most floral shops and studios in the US source flowers from all around the world. These flowers usually come from large-scale production farms where chemicals such as pesticides, fungicides, and preservatives keep the flowers bug free and ready to ship across the world. Workers at these farms are exposed to these chemicals on a daily basis and little is known about their actual working conditions.
Creative Director, Sarajane, has a background in labor rights issues and human trafficking. And, she has, like many of us, a healthy caution around chemicals and skin contact. These factors have lead Thatch to source as many flowers as possible from local farms and from farms that pass sustainability standards.
The Difference
Annually in the spring, Thatch does farm visits to inquire about growing practices, develop relationships with farmers, learn about their commitment to enhancing area ecosystems, and meet the farm staff. We choose our partners and growers carefully and enjoy making new friends along the way. We pride ourselves in our connection to both the farmers and the land which produces the products we work with.
By exclusively sourcing seasonal flowers for our events, we believe our clients get the most authentic, beautiful, and organic arrangements possible. The flowers we choose are at their peak beauty for the exact week of the event.
Growing flowers without chemicals typically costs more in labor for a farm. If that farm pays a fair living wage, it means the products are necessarily more expensive than South American farms. Thatch chooses to source this way despite the slight increase in cost. Sarajane's mother and father are both farmers. Growing up on a farm, you learn the amount of labor, love, and time that goes into producing one bunch of cosmos, zinnias, or dahlias. Our clients seek us out because they value people, farms, and healthy land. They understand that the flowers we select are of premium quality and are better for the environment.
The Details
The flower industry, similar to the fashion industry, can be incredibly exploitative for workers, as well as toxic. It can also create unnecessary trash, which ends up in landfills and the ocean. In addition to our sourcing, we offer only a few collections of vases for rental so that we can reuse and eliminate the need to buy new vases for every event.
We use foam-free design mechanics for arches and installations, recycle our plastics, and compost all organic material.
After events if you donβt want to take home your flowers, Thatch does its best to get flowers into the hands of folks who will enjoy them: often, elderly persons that do not leave their homes often. We also pay our employees and vendors well beyond the minimum wage and offer paid training, workshops, and retreats for personal development. We are in this business to support growers, artists, and serve our clients to the best of our ability, while caring for the earth.
